All Are Welcome Here!
Welcome to Historic St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Chelsea, familiarly known as St. Peter's Chelsea. We're located in the Chelsea Historic District of Manhattan listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Since being founded in 1831, our vision for St. Peter’s is to be a place where anyone in Chelsea or beyond can come and feel welcome, whether for program, spiritual or religious connection, or simply to read in our garden.
We are are a friendly and welcoming congregation of many races, genders, generations, and backgrounds.
Built from Manhattan schist rocks pulled from the ground beneath it, St. Peter’s is literally "The Rock of Chelsea." The building has served as a neighborhood center for ideas and programs, and living out our wider mission to the world through social action since completion in 1838.
St. Peter's is also known as "The Christmas Church" because it was founded by Clement Clarke Moore, author of A Visit From St. Nicholas (the world's most famous Christmas poem) and built on his estate Chelsea. The poem was the first portrayal of Santa as the modern world knows him today.
