Friends, we have an exciting opportunity ahead of us. St. Peter's was awarded a $500,000 matching grant from New York's State’s Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation to restore the crumbling exterior of the Rectory! This grant is rarely given to churches, but the state recognizes how St. Peter’s Rectory has been an important gathering place for the Chelsea community.
Our Rectory was built in 1831 to meet the spiritual hunger for worship in the neighborhood. Many groups have met in this building over the years, including sewing classes for girls and young women in 1907 and The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) during the Civil Rights Movement. More recently, it has been home to our Food Pantry, Chelsea Community Church, recovery groups and other gatherings that have found our Rectory a place of help, healing and support. We are proud to have served our neighborhood from this building for the past 189 years.
At this time, the exterior structure of the roof and all four walls need to be repaired to stop leaks. The cost estimate for replacing the roof, re-bricking, replacing the mortar, the chimneys and other masonry work is $1.7 million. We have until 2023 to start significant construction which means we will need to make good headway towards this goal in the next 24 months. That’s a large number but we are confident that together we can do it!

The baton has been passed to us. History isn’t just something we preserve. It’s something we create in the present for future generations. Museums are invaluable institutions but St. Peter’s is not a museum. It’s a living, breathing space that has gathered and welcomed people for generations. With your help, we can continue doing that.
